Національна рада Австрії (нижня палата парламенту) у четвер більшістю голосів затвердила рішення про саморозпуск.

Таким чином, повноваження законодавчого органу завершуються на рік раніше. Запланована дата дострокових виборів - 15 жовтня. Офіційно її мають затвердити в п’ятницю.

Керівники всіх фракцій парламенту Австрії домовилися про проведення дострокових виборів ще в травні після відставки віце-канцлера Райнхольда Міттерленера, який також пішов з посади голови Австрійської народної партії (АНП), що разом з Соціал-демократичною партією формує коаліцію.

Дострокові вибори ініціював глава МЗС Себастьян Курц, який віднедавна очолює АНП. Саме ця політична сила має найбільші шанси перемогти на виборах.

Канцлер Австрії Крістіан Керн спершу відкинув ідею Курца щодо проведення дострокових виборів, проте незабаром змінив свою позицію.

Коаліція соціал-демократів та консерваторів керує країною з 2013 року, чергові вибори мали відбутися восени 2018 року.
