В Сомали избран новый президент. Им стал бывший премьер-министр Мохамед Абдуллахи Мохамед. Он победил своего соперника Хассаеа Шейха Мохамуда во втором раунде выборов.

В головании участвовали только члены парламента страны. Они голосовали в авиационном ангаре на территории аэропорта Могадишо, поскольку все остальные места в Сомали чрезвычайно опасны, пишет ВВС

Новый президент Сомали имеет два гражданства - у него есть также американский паспорт.

Во время голосования над аэропортом была объявлена бесполетная зона, а сам комплекс охранялся особенно сильно. Руководство страны опасалось нападений исламистов из группировки "Аш-Шабаб".

Группировка "Аш-Шабаб", которая ведет войну с правительством Сомали, декларирует своей целью создание шариатского государства и объявлена террористической в Великобритании и США.

После избрания на улицы столицы вышло много людей, которые праздновали избрание нового лидера страны. Свидетели сообщают, что многие вооруженные люди стреляли в воздух.

В Сомали, фактически переставшем существовать как государство в 1991 году, свободные выборы не проводились с 1969 года.
