Платную онлайн-подписку на свои новости The New York Times запустило в 2011 году. На данный момент доступ к полной цифровой подписке, которая включает в себя материалы веб-версии сайта и мобильное приложение, стоит $8,75 в неделю.

Помимо этого, читатели, которые купили себе подписку на печатную версию издания, автоматически получают доступ к цифровой версии. Подписка на бумажную газету обойдется в $7 за ежедневный номер.

Общее количество подписчиков печатной версии (в разных конфигурациях) составляет 1,1 млн читателей. Прибавив 1 млн сугубо онлайн-подписчиков, The New York Times насчитывают 2,1 пользователей, которые имеют доступ к платному контенту.

Данное событие носит эпохальный характер, поскольку таким образом The New York Times получил наибольшее количество подписчиков за свою 164-летнюю историю и, фактически, является самым популярным и зарабатывающим СМИ в мире.

Представители компании отметили, что достижение такой цели подтверждает тот факт, что люди готовы платить за качественную журналистику, и переход в онлайн-формат не убивает, а наоборот расширяет горизонты для прессы.
