У суботу, 16 січня, на Тайвані проходять президентські вибори, в ході яких острів може вперше очолити жінка, а зв’язки із материковим Китаєм можуть бути остаточно розірвані. Право голосу в країні мають 18 мільйонів громадян. Багато виборців критикують нині правлячу партії Гоміньдан, що та не може забезпечити ріст економіки і занадто зближується з Китаєм.
Лідер опозиційної Демократичної прогресивної партії Цай Ін-вень до політики займалася науковою діяльністю. ЇЇ політсила виступає різко проти тісних контактів з Китаєм. Аналітики вважають Цай Ін-вень фаворитом нинішніх виборів.
Перші попередні результати голосування очікують ввечері.
Наприкінці листопада минулого року голови Китаю Сі Цзіньпін і Тайваню Ма Інцзю провели переговори державного рівня,вперше, відколи в результаті громадянської війни 1949 року Китайська Республіка «відкололася» від материкового Китаю і держави опинилися по обидва боки від Тайванської протоки. Китайське законодавство досі називає Тайвань провінцією КНР.
