На Шрі-Ланці обрали нового президента. На виборах переміг колишній міністр оборони 70-річний Готабая Раджапакса.

Раджапакса набрав 52,25% голосів виборців, його опонент Саджит Премадаса — 42%.

За даними виборчої комісії, явка на виборах склала 83,7%. Новообраний президент має скласти присягу 18 листопада.

Раджапакса позиціонує себе як сильного правителя, який здатний гарантувати безпеку на Шрі-Ланці. Зазначається, що питання нацбезпеки постало на першому місці після терактів у квітні цього року.

Готабая Раджапакса був міністром оборони, коли у 2005-2015 роках країну очолював його брат Махінда. Брати стали ініціаторами розгрому угруповання "Тигри визволення Таміл-Іламу", що закінчило багаторічну війну, у якій загинуло близько 100 тисяч людей.

Нагадаємо, раніше На Шрі-Ланці найняли двох катів, які готуються до виконання страт вперше за 40 років. Зґвалтування, незаконний обіг наркотиків і вбивства караються смертною карою на Шрі-Ланці, але страти не відбувалися протягом 43 років
