В Саудовской Аравии впервые в истории в муниципальные органы власти избраны женщины. Всего по стране выиграли выборы 20 жительниц королевства, передает Associated Press.

Всего в муниципальные представительские органы прошли 2100 кандидатов, и 20 женщин составляют менее одного процента от общего количества. Однако, как отмечается, даже это является шагом вперед для женщин, которым ранее было вообще запрещено участвовать в выборах.

Почему саудовским женщинам разрешили голосовать, но запрещают водить

В выборах принимали участие 7 тысяч кандидатов, из них 979 женщин. Муниципальные советы — единственные органы власти, которые могут избирать саудовские подданные.

В консервативном саудовском королевстве женщинам по-прежнему не разрешается водить автомобиль, за мужчинами остается последнее слово в таких аспектах жизни женщин, как брак, путешествия и получение высшего образования.

Голосование состоялось в субботу, 12 декабря. По данным властей королевства, в качестве избирателей зарегистрировались около 130 тысяч женщин и 1,35 миллиона мужчин.

Право голосовать и избираться в органы местного самоуправления женщинам Саудовской Аравии предоставил король Абдалла в 2011 году, за четыре года до смерти. Местные органы власти избираются в королевстве с 2005 года, депутаты имеют четырехгодичный срок полномочий.
