У розмові з BuzzFeed News Цукерберг спростував ці чутки, заявивши, що він планує сфокусуватися на Facebook та на ініціативі, яку він розвиває спільно зі своєю дружиною Прісцилою Чан, пише Media Sapiens

Причиною для поширення чуток щодо планів балотуватися на пост президента стала ціль Марка Цукерберга відвідати всі 50 штатів США і поспілкуватися з місцевими жителями. Це нагадало журналістам підготовку до передвиборчої гонки. Також на політичні амбіції Цукерберга натякало видання Bloomberg, звернувши увагу на те, яка ретельна робота ведеться щодо його публічного образу. Так, над веденням профілю Цукерберга в Facebook працює команда з десяти осіб.

Джерело, близьке до засновника Facebook, також підтвердило BuzzFeed, що Марк Цукерберг ніколи не говорив про наміри стати президентом США. Анонімне джерело також зазначило, що він може зайняти важливу роль в політичній системі США, але не ставить це за мету.

Як писав MediaSapiens, у відео-чаті з операційним директором Facebook Шеріл Сандберг, глава компанії вперше заговорив про те, що його компанія є медійною, просто «не традиційною».  Зокрема Цукерберг сказав: «Facebook - це новий вид платформи. Це не традиційна технологічна компанії. Це не традиційна медіакомпанія. Ви знаєте, ми створюємо технології, і ми відчуваємо відповідальність за те, як вони використовуються».

Експерти вже давно закидали Facebook, що вона є медіакомпанією, яка поширює новини та має редакційну позицію, проте Марк Цукерберг стійко дотримувався позиції, що Facebook є компанією технологічною.  

Побоювання з приводу впливу Facebook опинилися в центр уваги останнім часом через фейкові новини, які з'являються на сайті і припущення, що це вплинуло на президентські вибори в США. Інші інциденти, такі як цензурування відомого фото В'єтнамської війни також ставили під сумнів дії компанії.

Facebook в даний час намагається впоратися з наслідками. Соцмережа залучила до співпраці професійних фактечерів у спробі якщо не припинити, то хоча б стримати потік фейкових новин.
