Засновник Інтернет-партії Нової Залендії, а також файлообмінників Megaupload і Mega Кім Дотком запустив бета-версію браузерного сервісу для голосових та відео-дзвінків MegaChat.

Про це він повідомив у своєму Твіттері, повідомляє Media Sapiens

«З роки тому помер Megaupload, 2 роки тому народився Mega, а рік тому – Інтернет-партія. Сьогодні – ви отримуєте MegaChat», - написав він.

Для того, щоб користуватися новим сервісом, необхідно бути зареєстрованим користувачем сайту Mega або створити новий аккаунт на Mega.nz. MegaChat працює всередині сайту як вбудований сервіс, а не окрема програма.

На сервісі поки що доступні лише аудіо та відео-дзвінки, що за якості такі ж як і в Skype. За словами Кіма Доткома, функції текстових повідомлень та відео-конференції будуть додані пізніше.

MegaChat є безкоштовним у базовій версії. Вона залежить від обмежень порталу Mega.nz. Він надає безкоштовно 50 гігабайт для зберігання даних та 10 гігабайт трафіку на місяць.

Mega різниться від Skype тим, що забезпечує посилене шифрування даних користувачів. Під час реєстрації створюється спеціальний ключ безпеки, що використовується для відновлення доступу. Якщо особа губить його і пароль, доступ до аккаунту стає неможливим.

Кім Дотком також заявляє про програму грошової винагороди за знайдені недоліки та вразливості нової програми.

Про плани запуску «безпечного аналога Skype» стало відомо наприкінці минулого року.

Кім Дотком – скандально відомий через свій файлообмінник Megaupload. Ресурс було закрито спільними зусиллями американської та новозеландської влади у січні 2012 року. Доткома і його колег звинуватили у порушенні авторських прав через розповсюдження піратської продукції. Уряд США, за даними Wired, оцінивзбитки від діяльності проекту Megaupload у $500 млн.

Після арешту Доткома звільнили під заставу наприкінці лютого 2012 року. У січні 2013-го Дотком запустив свій новий проект, файлообмінний сервіс Mega, а наприкінці травня звинуватив впливові технологічні корпорації Google, Facebook i Twitter у порушенні власного патенту, відзначивши, що дозволить користуватися ним, якщо компанії допоможуть йому з фінансуванням юридичного захисту в США.
