Спикер Кнессета Юлий Эдельштейн решил, что выборы президента Израиля пройдут, как и намечалось ранее, во вторник, 10 июня. 

Решение принято после консультаций с юридическим советником Кнессета, Эйялем Иноном, сообщает MigNews.

Эдельштейн заявил: "Плохая атмосфера создалась вокруг выборов, и это вызывает неудовлетворение, бросает черную тень на претендентов из числа членов Кнессета". 

Далее спикер заявил: "Первый гражданин должен быть первым в честности, степени доверия и моральности. К сожалению, нельзя отрицать того, что в создавшейся обстановке выборы президента потеряют всякое уважительное и церемониальное измерение. С глубоким предчувствием беды я принял решение о том, что первоначальная дата проведения выборов изменена не будет". 

"Плохое предчувствие" Эдельштейна, несомненно, связано со сливом в прессу компромата против Биньямина Бен Элиезера, которого обвинили в коррупции, и против которого начали расследование. В результате Бен Элиезер снял свою кандидатуру с выборов. Эдельштейна, по всей видимости, имеет в виду соперника Бен Элиезера, давшего компрометирующие материалы журналистам. Имя этого соперника неизвестно. 

Ранее из-за неоднократных обвинений в сексуальных преступлениях свою кандидатуру снял другой кандидат – Сильван Шалом.
