Британская ежедневная газета The Guardian ввела функцию спонсорской подписки, чтобы оставить читателям свободный доступ к контенту, сообщает The Telegraph.
До этого издание, в противовес другим крупным западным изданиям, долго отказывалось вводить какие-либо инструменты для монетизации контента, поскольку принципиально не хотело ограничивать доступ к информации. Однако на фоне снижения доходов от рекламы редакции пришлось разработать специальную схему, позволяющую читателям становиться спонсорами и поддерживать газету пожертвованиями.
"Мы хотим сделать мир лучше и справедливее, хотим оставаться честными. Мы полагаем, что читателям нужна качественная независимая журналистика, которая рассказывает им правду. Все это трудная и дорогая работа. Все больше людей хотят читать The Guardian и все меньше людей готовы платить за это. Доходы от рекламы стремительно падают. Если вы читаете нас, и вам нравится, то что мы пишем, станьте одним из наших спонсоров. Так вы обеспечите The Guardian надежное будущее", – сказано в обращении издания к читателям.
Сумма пожертвований в месяц составляет $6,99. По состоянию на апрель, издание привлекло уже 230 тыс. спонсоров, хотя в начале года их было всего 50 тыс. Это, в свою очередь, помогло увеличить выручку от онлайн-версии.
Вместе с тем руководство компании поручило разработать запасной план на случай, если пожертвований читателей не будет хватать. Пока у газеты нет четких планов по введению пейволла (платной подписки), но руководство будет вынуждено сделать это, если окажется, что убытки слишком велики.
Напомним, The Guardian рассматривает возможность выпуска в формате таблоида для того, чтобы сократить расходы и снизить убытки.
