Издание со ссылкой на эксперта отмечает, что эти издержки объясняются сложностью содержания коал. Специалисты в течение долгого времени обучали двух коал, попавших на фотосессию, как вести себя с людьми. Молодого коалу можно держать на руках не более десяти минут в день. Это животное необходимо кормить эвкалиптом и давать ему спать по 20 часов в день.
В СМИ фотосессию, на которой мировые лидеры позируют с милыми зверями, назвали «дипломатией коал». По мнению одного из лидеров австралийской партии лейбористов, «вместо того, чтобы занять жесткую позицию по отношению к Путину, Тони Эббот заплатил 24 тысячи долларов из бюджета, чтобы Путин мог подержать коалу на руках».
