Журналіст Джо Вей (Joe Veix) створив фейкові аккаунти та інсценував, щоб випробувати Facebook щодо профілів померлих людей.

Джо Вей створив два фейкові профілі: для себе та свого вигаданого брата. Потім, відповідно до правил соцмережі, він обрав «брата» спадкоємцем аккаунту.

Журналіст дописував у Facebook від імені обох осіб. За допомогою фоторедактора та популярного генератора фейкових газет інсценував історію про свою загибель в результаті падіння дирижабля.

Через кілька днів після «смерті» Джо Вей скористався аккаунтом свого вигаданого брата і відправив соцмережі запит на управління профілем «померлого». Експеримент виявився вдалим. Аккаунт журналіста перейменували в Remembering Joe Veix (Пам’яті Джо Вея).  

«Цей абсурдний експеримент засвідчує, що тривожно швидко можна створити фейкову смерть у Facebook», - пише автор.

Він обурився тим фактом, що, судячи з його ситуації, для підтвердження смерті соцмережа перевіряє тільки чи була активність на аккаунті з дати можливої смерті. Журналіст також розповів, що надіслав до Facebook запит із проханням пояснити деталі процедури підтвердження смерті, але поки що не отримав відповіді.
