Вибори президента Алжиру призначені на 12 грудня. Про це у неділю, 15 вересня, в телевізійній промові повідомив тимчасовий голова держави Абделькадер Бенсалах.

Оголошення було зроблено після того, як впливовий начальник генштабу Збройних сил Алжиру Ахмед Гаїд Салах наголосив, що вибори у країні мають відбутися до кінця цього року, повідомила агенція AFP.

Президентські вибори у країні мали бути відбутися ще 4 липня. Однак Конституційна рада Алжиру скасувала їх, обґрунтувавши таке рішення відмовою у реєстрації двох кандидатів, які подали документи для участі у виборах. У раді не уточнили причин відмови у реєстрації кандидатів, однак, за інформацією агенції Reuters, підставою стало те, що вони не змогли пред'явити необхідні 60 тисяч підписів виборців.

У березні в Алжирі почались масові протести після того, як 82-річний президент країни Абдельазіз Бутефліка, який обіймав посаду протягом 20 років, оголосив, що балотуватиметься на п'ятий президентський термін. На тлі протестів на початку квітня він подав у відставку.

Через тиждень тимчасовим в.о. президента Алжиру був призначений Абделькадер Бенсалах. Втім, протести у країні не припинились - мітингарі вимагали усунення правлячої верхівки країни та бізнесменів, які десятиліттями правили країною.
