Победу на выборах мэра Нью-Йорка одержал 52-летний адвокат Билл де Блазио. Де Блазио станет первым американским демократом на посту мэра Нью-Йорка с 1989 года. На этом посту он сменит миллиардера Майкла Блумберга.
Главным соперником де Блазио считался республиканец Джозеф Лота, но, пишет Slon.ru, наибольшие шансы на победу все-таки были у демократа: с 2010 года де Блазио занимал пост общественного защитника мегаполиса. Де Блазио шел на выборы под лозунгом «сделать город лучше для всех»: его программа включает в себя сокращение разрыва между бедными и богатыми, повышение налогов для граждан с годовым доходом больше $500 тыс., строительство доступного жилья, улучшение работы школ и полиции.
Выборы также проходили в других крупных городах и штатах США. Так, губернатором Нью-Джерси избран Крис Кристи, которого, кстати, называют потенциальным кандидатом в президенты от партии республиканцев.
