Після перемоги Трампа на виборах США, Меркель стала лідером західного ліберального світу, зайнявши позицію критики популізму.

Її промова була призначена для здобуття підтримки серед представників консервативного блоку.

Також вона виступила за глобалізацію, заявивши, що "відкритість робить нас більш захищеними, ніж ізоляція".
