В Мьянме 8 ноября пройдут всеобщие выборы. 

Как ожидается, в них примут участие 83 партии. Четверть из 664 мест в парламенте зарезервирована за военными. Президент страны будет избран законодателями, однако Аун Сан Су Чжи, лидер главной оппозиционной партии «Национальная лига за демократию» (НЛД) не имеет права баллотироваться на эту должность, так как ее покойный муж был британцем, а ее два сына подданные Соединенного королевства. Две недели назад парламент проголосовал против такого ограничения на замещение должности президента. Об этом сообщает Лента.ру.

Как Мьянма превратилась в объект конкуренции мировых лидеров

В НЛД обещали в течение трех дней с момента объявления даты выборов заявить, будет ли партия в них участвовать.

После подавления массовых студенческих беспорядков, вызванных денежной реформой, в 1988 году к власти в Мьянме пришли военные. Они отказались признать результаты выборов в мае 1989 года, которые выиграла оппозиция. После этого страна оказалась в жесткой изоляции, Запад ввел против нее санкции.

В 2007 году в стране вспыхнули новые беспорядки, в ходе которых погибли около 100 человек. В последние годы правящий режим Мьянмы демонстрирует желание улучшить отношения с западными странами и делает определенные шаги к либерализации политического климата, что привело к частичному снятию санкций.
