В феврале 2020 года компания Mattel в сотрудничестве с Международным олимпийским комитетом (МОК) и организаторами Олимпийских игр в Токио — 2020 выпустила игрушки в коллаборации с разными брендами. Среди них была новая коллекция кукол Барби, вдохновленная играми.

Пять кукол Барби представили новый вид спорта, добавленный в программу Олимпийских игр в этом году: бейсбол, скалолазание, серфинг, карате и скейтбординг.

Однако пользователи соцсетей заметили, что в обновленном модельном ряду нет азиатских кукол — грубая ошибка со стороны Mattel только усугубилась тем, что в этом году Олимпийские игры проводятся в Токио.

Как заметил один пользователь, эта «упущенная возможность» компанией Mattel возникла и при разработке особенно японского предмета одежды — униформы для карате.
