Преса накинулася на нього з осудом. Як передає Бі-бі-сі, Хант хотів завоювати прихильність і нагадати, що його дружина - китаянка. Але замість цього назвав її японкою.

Присутні засміялися, а Хант швидко поправився. Але допущений ляп потрапив у заголовки, і сам міністр сказав, що допустив жахливу помилку.

Люсія Гуо народилася в місті Сіань у центральному Китаї. Вона познайомилася з Хантом у 2008 році, коли працювала в Уорикському університеті.

У 2012 році у Китаї прокотилась хвиля антияпонських демонстрацій через загострення ситуації навколо спірних островів. Хант знає японську мову і провів у цій країні два роки, викладаючи англійську.
