Сицилийский епископ Антонио Стальяно во время религиозного фестиваля сказал группе детей, что Санта-Клауса не существует. Родители этих детей были возмущены — они заявили, что священник вторгся в семейные традиции и оставил детей подавленными.

Стальяно заявил, что красный костюм и современный образ Санты придуман для рекламы Coca-Cola. Он пытался указать детям на католический смысл Рождества и рассказать историю Святого Николая, который раздавал дары беднякам и подвергался гонениям со стороны римского императора.

Но смысл его речи поняли не все, и епархия выпустила пост с извинениями.

«От имени епископа я выражаю сожаление по поводу заявления, которое разочаровало малышей, и хочу сказать, что намерения Стальяно были совсем другими», — написал  Алессандро Паолино, глава отдела коммуникаций.

Паолино подчеркнул, что детские фантазии ни в коем случае нельзя разрушать, а образ Санта-Клауса, конечно же, демонстрирует важность благотворительности и щедрости. Но все это теряет смысл, если излишне коммерциализировать Санту.
