BBC повідомляє, що група кіберзлочинців зламувала канали YouTube, щоб завантажувати діпфейк. У роликах показано, як він заохочує користувачів відправляти біткоїни або ефіри на адресу діджитал гаманця, обіцяючи, що їхні внески подвояться.

Вважається, що шахраї проникли в облікові записи, купивши комбінації електронної пошти та паролів, які раніше просочилися в результаті витоку даних, або спробували проникнути в них, ввівши спільні паролі.
Потім злочинці змінили імена та зображення профілів зламаних облікових записів, щоб симулювати особистість офіційних каналів Tesla.

За даними ВВС, перегляд історії транзакцій гаманця показав, що злочинці заробили 243 тисяч доларів трохи більше ніж за тиждень. Він також цитує звіт блокчейн-трекера Whale Alert, в якому йдеться, що до 2022 року шахраї заробили 30 мільйонів доларів.
