Віце-прем'єр та міністр внутрішніх справ Ізраїлю Сільван Шалом у неділю, 20 грудня, подав у відставку через звинувачення у сексуальних домаганнях. При цьому політик відмовився визнати свою провину і заявив, що вимушений залишити посаду, оскільки хоче вберегти від розгортання скандалу свою сім'ю - матір, дружину та п'ятьох дітей. "Я мав достатньо лиха… Моя сім'я мене підтримує, але це більше не вартує такої ціни", - наголосив Шалом, зазначає DW.COM із посиланням на агенцію dpa.

Ізраїльські ЗМІ повідомляли про кілька звинувачень від жінок у домаганнях з боку політика. За даними газети Jerusalem Post, 11 жінок звинуватили віце-прем'єра у зловживанні посадовими обов'язками і примушуванні до сексуальних контактів. Через це генеральний прокурор країни Єгуда Вейнштейн наказав поліції розслідувати обставини публікацій у ЗМІ, через які Шалом був змушений вибути з президентських перегонів минулого року, повідомляє Reuters.

Шалом, який раніше обіймав посаду міністра закордонних справ і фінансів, є одним з лідерів правлячої правої партії "Лікуд". Він не перший ізраїльський високопосадовець, який подав у відставку через звинувачення у сексуальних домаганнях. Колишній президент Ізраїлю Моше Кацав залишив свою посаду в 2007 році. Його приговорили до семи років тюремного ув'язнення за кількома статтями, у тому числі за зґвалтування.
