Новая станция-хаб, получившая название Oculus, расположена рядом с мемориалом жертвам теракта 11 сентября 2001 года. Крыша конструкции представляет собой стилизованную взлетающую белую птицу. Автор проекта — испанский художник-футурист Сантьяго Калатрава, пишет Лента. ру.

На строительство станции метро было потрачено 3,9 миллиарда долларов. Расходы почти в два раза превысили первоначальную смету. Возводили объект 12 лет вместо запланированных пяти.

Транспортный узел Oculus соединяет 11 линий метрополитена, станцию пригородного железнодорожного сообщения и паромную переправу. В сутки через хаб будет проходить около 250 тысяч пассажиров.

Несмотря на то что станция считается официально открытой, внутри продолжаются отделочные и строительные работы, которые должны завершиться в течение нескольких месяцев.

Атаки на объекты в США, устроенные террористами 11 сентября 2001 года, унесли жизни более трех тысяч человек. Самолеты, захваченные экстремистами, врезались в башни-близнецы Всемирного торгового центра (ВТЦ) в Нью-Йорке и в здание Пентагона. На месте разрушенных башен в 2002 году началась постройка первого здания нового комплекса ВТЦ. Позже были возведены мемориал 11 сентября и Freedom Tower (Башня Свободы).
