Парламент Албанії обрав свого спікера-соціаліста Іліра Мету президентом країни після того, як спроби досягти консенсусу з право-центристською опозицією провалилися.

Так, 28 квітня парламент Албанії, який складається зі 140 депутатів, 87-ма голосами проголосував за кандидатуру Мети. Опозиція продовжувала бойкотувати засідання парламенту і не брала участі голосування.

Зазначають, що 48-річний економіст Ілір Мета є лідером молодіжної партії «Соціалістичний рух за інтеграцію». Його кандидатуру підтримала Соціалістична партія прем’єра Еді Рами. У 30 років Мета був прем’єр-міністром, також працював міністром закордонних справ.

Його кандидатуру обрали після трьох раундів, під час яких урядова коаліція не могла висунути кандидата, заявляючи, що хоче щодо цього досягти консенсусу з право-центристською опозицією.

Ілір Мета змінить на посаді президента Буяра Нішані 24 липня.
