Одне з найбільших видавництв світу - Penguin Random House - випустило біографію радянського вождя Йосипа Сталіна, автором якої став Стівен Коткін.
 
Книга має зруйнувати міф про сприйняття Сталіна як сина бідного шевця, який повністю переосмислив себе під час Жовтневої революції.

Автор біографії описує вождя як хитрого, деспотичного соціопата з обережним ставленням до людей, але схильного до необдуманих рішень.

Основу десятирічного розслідування склали архівні документи зовнішньої і внутрішньої радянської розвідки і КДБ.

Стівен Коткін також відмовляється від загальноприйнятої подачі дій Сталіна як результату його психологічних особливостей.

На думку автора, параноя вождя була зумовлена політичним контекстом і без імперіалістичної спадщини царської Росії могла б і не розвинутися.
