Соціал-демократ Франк-Вальтер Штайнмайер став 12-м президентом ФРН, не залишивши жодних шансів чотирьом іншим кандидатам, повідомляє Укрінформ.

За нього проголосували 931 з 1260 членів колегії виборців з необхідних 631. Вибори пройшли в один тур.

Перемога Штайнмайєра, який був єдиним кандидатом від трьох партій, що входять у правлячу коаліцію - Християнсько-демократичного союзу (ХДС), Християнсько-соціального союзу (ХСС) та Соціал-демократичної партії Німеччини (СДПН) – була фактично гарантована спочатку. 

Зазначається, що Штайнмайєр прийшов до бундестагу з дружиною Ельке Бюденбендер, дочкою і мамою.

Політик користується великою популярністю не тільки у колег, але і в народі, кілька років поспіль очолює рейтинг найбільш популярних політиків ФРН, обганяючи і канцлера Ангелу Меркель.

Президента в Німеччині вибирають федеральні збори, що складаються з 1260 делегатів. До складу цього органу входять 630 депутатів бундестагу і таке ж число делегатів, яких за принципом пропорційності направляють ландтаги. Зазвичай це депутати земельних парламентів, але ландтаги можуть делегувати в федеральні збори і політиків комунального рівня, а також відомих громадських діячів. 

Президент ФРН обирається на 5 років. Ця посада є в країні швидше репрезентативною. Реальна влада перебуває в руках канцлера.
