Російський кінорежисер Валерій Балаян 26 травня отримав українське громадянство

Валерій Балаян, що мав російський паспорт, розповів про це на початку свого творчого вечора у Будинку кіно:

"Сьогодні відбулася знаменна подія. Години дві-три тому мені зателефонував державний чиновник - чи можете собі уявити таке в Росії? - з відділу громадянства Святошинського району та повідомив, що всі документи пройшли і я тепер - громадянин України. Для мене це велике свято".

Валерій Балаян народився у Сумах. Починав свій шлях у кінематографії на кіностудії «Ленфільм» (1980-1982рр) - в знімальних групах Динари Асанової, Іллі Авербаха, Михайла Єршова, Володимира Фетіна, Сергія Овчарова та ін. У 1982 році прийнято асистентом оператора на Ленінградську студію документальних фільмів. Працював в знімальних групах Олексія Учителя, Миколи Обуховича, Сергія Скворцова, Павла Когана та ін. У 1984 році вступив на сценарне відділення Вищих курсів сценаристів і режисерів Держкіно СРСР (майстерня Леоніда Гуревича). У 1989 році закінчив навчання як режисер неігрового кіно ВКСР.

У наступні роки за сценаріями Валерія Балаяна поставлені понад 40 документальних фільмів і більше 60 він зняв самостійно як режисер.
