В Саудовской Аравии состоялись муниципальные выборы, где впервые приняли участие женщины.

Они имели право голосовать и быть избранным, пишет Укринформ 

«Около 980 женщин и свыше пяти тысяч мужчин зарегистрировались как кандидаты на выборах», — говорится в сообщении.

Для участия в голосовании зарегистрировались 130 тысяч женщин. Количество мужчин-избирателей составило 1,35 миллиона человек.

Специальной квоты для женщин на муниципальных выборах не было.

Согласно законодательству Саудовской Аравии, где государственной религией является суннитский ислам, женщины голосовали отдельно от мужчин. Для этого были созданы специальные избирательные участки.

Как известно, Саудовская Аравия — единственная в мире страна, где женщинам до сих пор запрещалось участвовать в выборах. Предыдущие муниципальные выборы в стране прошли в 2005 и 2011 годах.
