У соцмережах прокремлівські канали поширюють інформацію, що газета The Independent на передній сторінці газети від 5 серпня 2024 року розмістила статтю під назвою «Поки ми стежили за Україною, ми втратили свою країну».

Насправді The Independent не публікувало такого матеріалу. Про це пишуть журналісти з проєкту VoxCheck. Статтю із подібним заголовком пропагандисти згенерували на підробленій сторінціThe Independent. За основу взяли справжню публікацію видання від 5 серпня 2024 про заворушення. 

Також на обкладинці анонсують нібито інтерв’ю з Валерієм Залужним із сенсаційним зізнанням. Мовляв, на посаді головнокомандувача ЗСУ він «хотів вкоротити собі віку». Однак це теж неправда — Залужний такого не казав, адже жодне надійне джерело про це не писало.

У Voxcheck додають, що фейкова стаття про заворушення — це частина проросійської операції «Матрьошка», організованого поширення дезінформації в X та інших соцмережах, часто — від імені відомих медіа чи публічних осіб. 

Мета цього фейку — підсилити нестабільні настрої у Великій Британії після трагедії в Саутпорті.
