Дослідникам зі Стенфорда і Прінстона вдалося ідентифікувати 70% користувачів шляхом порівняння їх історії відвідування веб-сторінок із загальнодоступною інформацією у соціальних мережах.

Вчені порівнювали історію відвідин сайтів в режимі інкогніто з постами в Twitter, зазначає Новое время із посиланням на The Stack.

Випробовувані використовували розширення Chrome, яке зберігає їх історію перегляду. Потім дослідники використовували власний протокол скорочення посилань для виявлення посилань типу t.co. 81% даних після проходження через програму деанонімізацію містили коректну інформацію про користувача. При цьому в 72% випадків користувача вдалося однозначно ідентифікувати. 

Як уточнюють автори дослідження, брокери даних і рекламодавці можуть зібрати достатню історію з допомогою відстеження файлів cookie та провести успішну ідентифікацію користувача.

Використання протоколу HTTPS з'єднання та послуги VPN можуть обмежити вплив таких спроб повторної ідентифікації, хоча перший спосіб не маскує базовий URL сайту, а другий не заважає відстеженню cookie.

"Користувачі можуть припустити, що вони є анонімними, коли вони дивляться новини або веб-сайти про здоров'я, але наша робота додає новий шлях, яким компанії можуть дізнатися особистість користувача", - коментує доцент кафедри інформатики в Прінстонському університеті Арвінд Нараянан.
