Президент Латвії Раймонд Вейоніс закликав Сейм прийняти рішення про запровадження в Латвії всенародних виборів президента з більш широкими повноваженнями.

З таким закликом Вейоніс в четвер, 22 червня, звернувся до депутатів на останньому засіданні Сейму весняної сесії, повідомляє портал Європейська правда з посиланням на Delfi 

Вейоніс вважає, що всенародні вибори президента могли б відбутися вже в 2019 році. До того ж варто розширити повноваження глави держави.

Президент країни зазначив, що жителі Латвії вже тривалий час незадоволені державним управлінням і порядком прийняття рішень. Ситуацію може виправити реформа, яка розширить повноваження президента країни.

Всенародно обраному президенту Латвії варто було б надати право ініціювати розпуск Сейму, вважає Вейоніс.

Вейоніс закликав парламент не зволікати і направити на розгляд необхідні поправки до Конституції вже восени цього року.

Відповідно до діючого порядку президента Латвії обирає Сейм більшістю голосів депутатів - не менше ніж 51 голоси.
