Партія німецької канцлерки Анґели Меркель Християнсько-демократичний союз (ХДС) вирішила підтримати кандидатуру соціал-демократа, міністра закордонних справ ФРН Франка-Вальтера Штайнмаєра на посаду президента. Політичні сили, які складають більшість у Бундестазі, довго не могли визначитися з єдиним претендентом на представницьку посаду. Оголошене в понеділок, 14 листопада, рішення було ухвалене після зустрічі напередодні між Меркель, її партнером за Християнсько-соціальним союзом (ХСС) Горстом Зеегофером та головою соціал-демократів Зіґмаром Ґабріелем, пише DW.COM

За нещодавнім опитуванням, проведеним спільно компанією Emnid та телеканалом N24, Штайнмаєра на посаді президента воліють бачити 41 відсоток німців. Його головними конкурентами вважалися міністр фінансів Вольфґанґ Шойбле (30 відсотків опитаних) та прем'єр-міністр Баден-Вюртембергу Вінфрід Кречманн (24 відсотка).

Чинний президент країни Йоахім Ґаук вирішив не балотуватися на другий п'ятирічний термін. Його наступника 12 лютого 2017 року мають обрати Федеральні збори. До них входять депутати Бундестагу й делегати від федеральних земель відповідно до розстановки сил у земельних парламентах.
