У Москві у віці 81 року помер радянський і російський продемократичний політик, історик Юрій Афанасьєв.

Колишній ректор Московського державного історико-архівного інституту, засновник і президент Російського гуманітарного університету Юрій Афанасьєв наприкінці 1980-их років опублікував низку статей із критикою стану в історичній науці. У 1989 році був обраний народним депутатом СРСР. Співголова Міжрегіональної депутатської групи – першої радянської легальної парламентської опозиції, повідомляє Радіо Свобода

Афанасьєв – один із творців і співголова руху «Демократична Росія». Він став в опозицію щодо Михайла Горбачова, засудивши прокомуністичну частину З’їзду народних депутатів СРСР як «агресивно-слухняну більшість».

На початку 1992 року Афанасьєв призупинив своє членство в керівництві руху на знак незгоди з політикою його керівництва. У червні 1993 року він оголосив про свій відхід з політики.
