Новим лідером країни став 81-річний генерал у відставці християнин-мароніт Мішель Аун.

Президентська посада буда вакантною 29 місяців - з травня 2014 року, коли її залишив Мішель Сулейман. Ліванські депутати не могли домовитися про наступного очільника держави, який влаштовував би мусульман і християн. З 46 спроби депутатам вдалося вирішити це питання - 83 з 127 присутніх на сесії проголосували за кандидатуру Ауна. Ліванці сподіваються, що новий лідер зможе згуртувати суспільство.

Мішель Аун вважається союзником шиїтського руху Хізбалла, його перемогу також розцінюють як підсилення позицій сирійського президента Башара Асада. У той самий час, Ауну вдалося заручитися підтримкою ліванських сунітів, пообіцявши їхньому лідеру Сааду Харірі посаду прем'єр-міністра.
