46-річний Джиммі Моралес переміг на жовтневих виборах на тлі гучного корупційного скандалу, через який свою посаду був змушений покинути його попередник Отто Перес Моліна - його усунули від влади і позбавили недоторканності за звинуваченнями в отриманні хабарів від імпортерів за звільнення від митних зборів.

Джиммі Моралес - відомий гватемальський актор і продюсер. Різкий зліт його популярності політологи пов'язують з втомою громадян Гватемали від традиційних політиків і корупції.

Як повідомляє кореспондент ВВС у Центральній Америці, існує ряд побоювань щодо його здібностей управляти країною. Як відзначають експерти, його передвиборча програма займала всього шість сторінок друкованого тексту, і по ній складно робити висновки про те, як новий глава держави збирається виводити країну з кризи.
