Васема Ахтара, колишнього парламентаря і регіонального міністра, представника опозиційної партії "Об’єднаний національний рух" (MQM), засудили раніше цього року за обвинуваченням у тероризмі. На голосуванні 24 серпня він, однак, здобув більшість голосів.

Пакистанська влада звинувачує представників партії MQM у причетності до рекету, викрадень, тортур і вбивств у Карачі. У партії, однак, спростовують обвинувачення, називаючи їх утисками опозиції.
