Исторические выборы прошли на Кубе. Независимым кандидатам позволили взять участие в выборах в местные органы власти. Впервые со времен революции с 1959 года участие в выборах позволили взять кандидатам не от правящей коммунистической партии.
 
В нескольких округах независимые кандидаты даже смогли выйти во второй круг голосования. При этом из оппозиции никто не победил.
Поэтому однопартийная система Кубы устояла. Изменения в системе выборов страны связывают с налаживанием отношений между Кубой и США. После более пятидесятилетней вражды в декабре прошлого года страны огласили о возобновлении контактов.
