У столиці Канади відбулася церемонія інавгурації нового генерал-губернатора країни, яким стала колишня астронавтка Жюлі Пейетт, пише ТСН

Згідно з процедурою, кандидат на цю посаду призначається королевою Великобританії за порадою чинного прем'єр-міністра країни. Надалі генерал-губернатор буде офіційно представляти її інтереси в Канаді і де-юре стане главою держави. Також до його повноважень входить прийняття присяги у прем'єр-міністра і членів його кабінету, право розпускати парламент і оголошувати вибори, а також погоджувати всі закони.

Жюлі Пейетт 53 роки. Вона комп'ютерний інженер, проте в 1992 році пройшла серйозний відбір та стала першою канадкою, що побувала на борту МКС. Вона брала участь у двох космічних місіях, працювала головним астронавтом Космічного агентства Канади, а наразі залучена до багатьох громадських проектів. До інших досягнень Жюлі також можна віднести знання шести іноземних мов.

Пейетт змінила Девіда Джонстона, який обіймав посаду з вересня 2010 року. Але ось першою жінкою генерал-губернатором вона не стане, оскільки має трьох попередниць.
