Британська служба урядового зв’язку (GCHQ) масово стежила за електронною комунікацією журналістів найбільших американських та європейських медіа.

Cеред видань, пошту яких перехоплювала спецслужба, - BBC, Reuters, Тhe Guardian, Тhe New York Times, Le Monde, the Sun, NBC та Тhe Washington Post.

GCHQ зберігала кореспонденцію журналістів і поширювала її через свою внутрішню мережу в ході тестових випробувань.

З’ясувалося, що кореспонденція журналістів була серед 70000 електронних листів, зібраних агентством GCHQ за менш, ніж 10 хвилин одного дня у листопаді 2008 року.

Серед перехоплених листів деякі є простими прес-релізами, що надсилаються десяткам журналістів. Однак потрапило до спецслужби і спілкування між репортерами та редакторами, обговорення тем матеріалів. При цьому невідомо, чи стежили за журналістами навмисно.

Британський уряд тривалий час зіштовхується із тиском громадськості про необхідність захисту від шпигунства конфіденційної інформації репортерів, депутатів та юристів.

Редактори та правники у Великій Британії закликають невідкладно прийняти необхідні закони на захист свободи вираження у зв’язку зі зростанням загрози стеження. Понад 100 редакторів підписали листа до прем’єр-міністра Девіда Кемерона на знак протесту проти перехоплення журналістської кореспонденції.
